South of Dublin is a small city called Kilkenny. The town is quaint and the people are very friendly. There is also great shopping in this little town. I would suggest staying in the Kilkenny House Hotel. It is newly renovated and very reasonable. Places to visit while there:
- Kilkenny Castle - Newly renovated by the Irish government from EU grants, this castle gives you a good idea of how 19th century "Anglo-Irish" noblity changed castles to fit their needs. Originally owned by the Butler family, it was abondoned when the cost of the upkeep became too much. The government bought the castle from the Butler family for 50 pounds! The community has taken great care to restore the rooms to their original grandeur by using pictures and writing from the time period.
- Kilkenny Design Center - GREAT SHOPPING! You can get traditional Erin sweaters signed by the artist, pottery, and handmade jewlery. Check this website out for more info: http://www.kilkennydesign.com/CraftsPeople/index.html.
