Traditional Music in Kilkenny

South of Dublin is a small city called Kilkenny. The town is quaint and the people are very friendly. There is also great shopping in this little town. I would suggest staying in the Kilkenny House Hotel. It is newly renovated and very reasonable. Places to visit while there:

  1. Kilkenny Castle - Newly renovated by the Irish government from EU grants, this castle gives you a good idea of how 19th century "Anglo-Irish" noblity changed castles to fit their needs. Originally owned by the Butler family, it was abondoned when the cost of the upkeep became too much. The government bought the castle from the Butler family for 50 pounds! The community has taken great care to restore the rooms to their original grandeur by using pictures and writing from the time period.

  2. Kilkenny Design Center - GREAT SHOPPING! You can get traditional Erin sweaters signed by the artist, pottery, and handmade jewlery. Check this website out for more info: http://www.kilkennydesign.com/CraftsPeople/index.html.

Rainy Dublin

I have to say that the weather was pretty miserable during our two days in Dublin, but the sites were still very interesting.

Trinity College is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen in Europe. The English built it during the 18th century to educate the Irish people. One of the most interesting things we saw while there was the Book of Kells. It is one of the oldest Latin manuscripts of the 4 gospels and is decorated with beautiful and intricate Celtic designs. http://www.tcd.ie/

We also enjoyed the dining in Dublin. The Temple Bar district is full of interesting resteraunts of all types. I enjoyed most Fitzer's Bar, which serves typical Irish fare with a modern twist. It's not just your mom's beefstew, ok! If you are planning to visit Dublin soon, be sure to try this place out!

Lastly, you can't miss out on the Guiness Factory Tour. It's very informative, and you get a pint of Guiness in the upper pub. Their bar has great views of the city and the glass is very clear- great picture taking opportunities. I enjoyed their new brew "North Star." Check it out when you're there.
